Water resistant Java shutters are made from high grade ABS (acrylonile butadiene styrene), a more robust alternative to cheaper vinyl. ABS is a hard lightweight plastic used for various purposes including bathrooms and kitchens.

They can be attached to exterior opening patio doors using door handle cut outs.
